The Influence of Narcissistic Leadership on Employees: A Systematic Review and Directions for Future Research

Narcissistic leaders are common in the workplace, and narcissistic leadership has received much attention from researchers. This study has conducted a systematic literature review of research on the influence of narcissistic leadership on employees. This research has clarified the present situation of the consequences, mediators, moderators, and theoretical perspectives of relevant studies. Based on this literature review, the present study has proposed directions for future research that highlight the need to intensify the research on the double-edged sword effect of narcissistic leadership, strengthen the applications of various theories, expand the explorations of mediators, broaden the research on moderators, and enrich the research designs. This research contributes to the literature on narcissistic leadership and employees’ attitudes and behaviors and offers practical benefits for managers to cope with narcissistic leaders in organizations.
